Message from the Principal

Dear Students, Faculty, Alumni, and Well-Wishers,
A warm welcome to the Y.M.C.A. College of Physical Education, Chennai — South East Asia's first college dedicated to the science and art of physical education, and an institution that has stood as a beacon of excellence for over a century.

Our story began in August 1920, when Mr. Harry Crowe Buck — a visionary from Pennsylvania, USA, and a devoted servant of the YMCA — established what was then a modest training school at Esplanade, Madras. With a handful of students and an unwavering belief in the transformative power of physical education, he laid the foundation of a movement that would shape sport and physical culture across an entire nation. Today, that seed has grown into a proud institution on our historic 64-acre campus at Nandanam, gifted by the Government of India — a campus that Harry Crowe Buck himself called home until his passing in 1943, and where his memory is preserved with reverence.

Mr. Buck is rightly celebrated as the Father of Physical Education in India. He introduced systematic teacher training, established Olympic standards through his landmark 'Books of Rules,' championed the Olympic movement in India, and helped found the All-India Olympic Association in 1924. His legacy not merely of sport, but of character — rooted in the YMCA's abiding values of physical, mental, moral, and spiritual development.

Over the past 104 years, this institution has carried that legacy faithfully forward. We are proud to be:

A Government-Aided Autonomous Institution affiliated to the Tamil Nadu Physical Education and Sports University

Accredited 'A' Grade by NAAC and recognized by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE)

A co-educational institution since 1940, welcoming generations of young men and women to the pursuit of physical excellence.

Home to one of the finest physical education campuses in South Asia — featuring the city's first swimming pool, basketball courts, open air theatre, well-equipped laboratories, and a central library.

As Principal, I am deeply conscious that I am the steward of a legacy that transcends any individual. Every student who walks through our gates inherits more than a degree — they inherit a tradition of discipline, service, and the conviction that a healthy nation begins with physically literate citizens.

Our academic programme — from the B.P.E.S. B.P.Ed. and M.P.Ed. to M.Sc., and Ph.D. — are designed not merely to produce teachers and coaches, but to nurture leaders who will carry the torch of physical education into schools, communities, and sporting arenas across India and beyond.

I invite every aspiring student to be part of this extraordinary journey. I encourage our alumni — scattered across the country and the world — to continue to be ambassadors of what this institution stands for. And I assure every parent and well-wisher that Y.M.C.A. College of Physical Education remains, as it has always been, committed to shaping not just physically capable individuals, but complete human beings.

The spirit of Harry Crowe Buck lives on in every game played, every class taught, and every life transformed within these walls. Together, let us honour that spirit — and build upon it.

With warm regards and best wishes,

Dr. George Abraham
